About Nick

Key Experiences

Ex aero engineering army officer - now a senior leader in Accenture
My first 11 years after school were spent as an army officer, working in brilliant locations such as Hong Kong, Germany, USA and UK. I joined Accenture in 2003 and only intended to be here for a couple of years, for the sake of my CV!

I have had multiple roles across our technology and business process outsourcing (BPO) organisations, but always remained actively involved in people and leadership development activities.

Most recently, I have worked on challenging BPO projects in France, Romania and the Netherlands - I love the cultural diversity that comes with this and working across Accenture's global delivery teams.

Current Position

I lead a team of technology account managers, working on BPO accounts
One of Accenture's businesses is called Operations. Within this practice, my role is leading a team of onshore and offshore people supporting clients across Europe and South Africa. We provide technology account management and leadership for Business Process Services (previously called BPO) clients.

I love the location flexibility of my role, in terms of leading virtual teams, plus the direct interaction with clients we help on their journey to intelligent operations.

My role also allows me to invest time and energy in our talent of the future and work on multiple leadership development programmes.

Main Motivations

Brilliant people, plus lots of flexibility and rewarded on outcomes
Historically, people have talked about challenges with work-life balance. My issue with this is we are all individuals and balance means different things to different people.

What I love about my role is I have the flexibility to shape outcomes and am judged (rewarded) on what is delivered, rather than having to follow a process someone else has designed - I get bored very quickly, so having the freedom to be creative and have fun makes all the hard work worth while.

Top Advice

Remain authentic, colourful and have fun!
In the past, it was common to hear people talk about 'Andersen Androids' or ask if Accenture people had been chipped yet! This could be no further from the truth in the current Accenture, where inclusion and diversity (embracing how everyone is unique and adds value) is not simply talked about, but very real and visible every single day.

It will sound trite, but you will not be at your best if you try to be somebody else in how you work or operate in a way that is not natural to you.

Greatest Achievement

Voted UKI Most Inspirational Leader for my level
Accenture Operations has an annual awards programme for which people are nominated by their friends and colleagues against different categories. Those nominated are then assessed by a panel and if successful, move on to the final voting round where Accenture people vote for their winner.

I was humbled to win an award for Most Inspirational Leader at my level in 2017 - this meant so much to me as it was voted for by people I work with (people who I have led on projects and worked very hard at times!)
